On ebay there is a kanute (canadian) selling a photo of Intrepid. He has listed the item and has stated that Intrepid previously had the pennant number L3005. I put him right on the subject of course but he insists that according to JANES FIGHTING SHIPS, HMS Intrepid had the pennant L3005 during the sixties and Fearless had the pennant L3004. Now we all know that RFA Sir Gallahad was L3005 so can anyone shed any light on this...

DID INTREPID EVER HAVE L3005 AS HER PENNANT NUMBER BEFORE SHE BECAME L11?????

Never heard that before. Perhaps collectively we need to do a bit of research to confirm it or otherwise. Such things even if untrue can then sometimes become urban legends.

Just my thoughts.

L3005 was Sir Gallahad Launched in 1966, in Stephens shipyard in Govan Glasgow, so both ships where being built and commisioned at around the same time, in the same place, i wonder if this as caused the confussion.
There was also a first world war submarine HMS L11, and L11 was the the code the yanks gave to the little boy nuclear bomb in the second world war.

NO! It was NEVER L3005!!!
The Canadian definately has got it wrong George and perhaps Janes jumped the gun too.
After checking up on Fearless some time ago, I discovered that prior to the Fearless pennant number being finaly decided, the 'powers that be' noted the next pennant number for landing craft etc ran into four figures. It was decided that, as Fearless was to be the first British LPD she ought to have no more than a two digit number. If memory serves me correctly, L6/7 belonged to the French and the Yanks had an 8 and 9.(could be other way around) Which is why Fearless, it was decided, would be L10.Naturaly leading to L11 for Intrepid.

Hope that clears it up for you George.
