| I was thinking about "Pulpit Rock" last week. I was up the hills for a few days and I the view from Lochnagar reminded me a bit.... I took longer than "2 hours" to get to the top though... but in mitigation, I was carrying a full pack with three days nosh.... |

| I'll certainly set you off at the starting point and wait for you, no problem Steve - as for the trip up you're on your own. I've done it about a dozen times but the last time (last year) I was suffering with my knees and feet on the way back down. Great pictures Alan, you are wanderer eh! I was at Lochnagar Crater in the Somme a couple of weeks ago. The crater itself was caused by two charges of ammonal, of 24,000lb and 30,000lb. It was blown along with 16 others at 0728 on the morning of 1 July 1916 as a two-minute precursor to the start of the offensive. (when the British had 60,000 casualties in the first few hours) The Lochnagar Crater measured 300ft across and 90ft deep (200ft wide and 81ft deep by 1919). Debris from the explosion apparently rose some 4,000ft into the air. |

Looks like a hard place to find a seat once you get up there! Busy. |

| Can get busy at this time of the year - they had about 120,000 people up there last year. So there's no problem getting lost - just follow the hordes! Probably a lot less crowded at Lochnagar in Scotland.... |

| How come the "Lochnagar" the hole, got that name Randal? Were the Gordon Highlanders nearby? "Lochnagar" the hill, is very much in their territory.
Lochnagar, the hill, is too well visited unfortunately, witness the severe path erosion around there. However, I had it to myself that day... but I set of wearing waterproofs, gaiters, wooly hat, gloves..... It was a favourite hill for Queen Victoria to climb I believe...
